I love Fabric!
No, it’s not just because of the dresses but also as fabric has been part of my upbringing. I love fabrics and stitching my dresses.
While most shoppers love the sight of a good dress, I gasp at the sight of a good fabric.
Like me, many love seeing fabrics and different dresses on TV and movies and always have thoughts on buying that specific dress. But when it comes to buying the fabric….. Quite clueless!
These are a few questions that ponder on our mind when we think of fabric:
Where to buy the fabric from?
Which fabric to buy?
How much fabric do I need to buy? And so on!
Feel the same? If yes, then read ahead to know “How to buy Fabric online” and “What are the 5 amazing Fabric that you should buy to make a dress”.

I consider myself blessed and lucky to be born and bought up in a family with a fabric background. I have seen fabrics and stitching and embroidery all throughout my childhood. My parents have learned this art and are both professionals in stitching and dressmaking.
Another surprise – My grandparent’s house also holds textile handlooms. Activities that take place there range from making the thread rolls to the fabric. All of this takes place under one roof, where my siblings and I have played and grown up.
Coming back to the point, there are tons of go-to places to buy Fabric in Mumbai. But considering the current situation and lockdown, I have developed and found fabric stores from where we can choose between 1000 types of fabrics listed and buy Fabric online. Really! I’m not kidding.
Things to keep in mind while buying Fabric:
A. Dimension:
When shopping for fabric, understand terms such as “Meter” and “Yarns” where 1 meter = 100 cm and 1 yarn = 90 cm. What differs is the width of different fabrics. Fabrics have widths that start from 35 inches and go up to 60 inches in width. The higher the width the lesser the fabric you need. Also, most imported high-quality fabric has 60 inches width and preferred choice. If you’re not sure how much fabric you need to make a particular dress, Fabcurate has an estimator tool to help you understand your requirement.
B. Weight:
Heavy the fabric more will be its use for organized structural work like borders etc. Lighter the fabric more will be its use for flowing kinds of dresses. So, understand the weight and the flow of the fabric before deciding on the pattern.

5 amazing Fabric online that you can buy for dressmaking:
1.Cotton Fabric:
Cotton is a natural woven fabric, one which is extremely comfortable to wear. It’s breathable and can make you feel cold even in seasons with hot temperatures. Most of the cotton fabrics range between 35 to 45 inches in width. Softer the cotton, the better! Inferior quality has more of a rough feel. Gone are the days when people use to think of cotton as a cheaper fabric choice. Better the quality, expensive will be the Fabric. You can check various cotton fabrics online here.
2. Silk:
It’s smooth, soft, and has a luxurious feel to it. It’s one of the best types of fabric to make dresses. Silk is also available in multiple types such as raw silk, cotton silk, butter silk, Paper silk, and so on. Among them, my favourite is cotton Silk. As Silk is usually difficult to maintain so be sure when you’re buying one. There are many more Silk prints and types available on Fabcurate. Do check them out.
3. Satin:
It’s a luxurious fabric mostly used for making wedding gowns and kids’ clothes. Satin fabric comes in different weights that help you understand the fabric quality and also different weighted fabric is used for different types of dressmaking. For borders etc, a heavyweight structured Satin fabric is used. Again, there are different types of Satin available for example, modal satin, Ultra Satin, Japan Satin. Most of the imported versions of Satin come in 60” inches width.
