Whether you’re planning a peaceful getaway or an action-packed adventure. This blog series will help you craft the perfect Sikkim itinerary. Here’s a sneak peek into Day 1 capturing the Gangtok itinerary. Which will kick off with Gangtok—the vibrant capital of Sikkim.
Day 1: Gangtok itinerary: Arrival in Gangtok
How to Reach:
- By Air: There are limited direct flights from Mumbai to Bagdogra Airport (non-stop flights take 2hours 50 Minutes). This is the nearest airport to Gangtok. It’s advisable to book your flights in advance due to limited availability. From Bagdogra, Gangtok is approximately 124 km away. While the drive should ideally take 4-5 hours. But the traffic and winding mountain roads often stretch the journey to around 6-7 hours.
- By Train: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), located about 120 km from Gangtok. Similar to the drive from Bagdogra, this road journey also takes around 4-5 hours. But be prepare for possible delays due to traffic and road conditions.
- By Bus: Regular bus services operate from Siliguri to Gangtok. It takes about 4-5 hours, but it’s recommended to check the frequency and availability in advance.
Where to Eat:
About 50 km from Bagdogra Airport, you’ll come across Abhinay Restaurant on ground floor. It is a great spot to take a break during your journey to Gangtok. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes, including North Indian cuisine. But their momos—both fried and steamed—are a must-try. It’s an ideal place for a light meal, known for its cleanliness, hygiene, and reasonable prices. Just outside the restaurant, there is a spacious, well-maintained washroom with separate sections for men and women making it a convenient stop for travelers.
Exploring Gangtok:
After reaching Gangtok, unwind by visiting the famous MG Marg, the heart of the town. It’s a charming street where you can enjoy a leisurely stroll, shop for local goods. One can also savour delicious street food as well as known and unknown restaurant outlets. Think of it as a mini Colaba Causeway, bustling with restaurants, shopping stalls. However, with a cozy seating area with flower displays perfect for taking in the local atmosphere.

Where to Stay:
We stayed at Hotel Sikkim Legend, located slightly away from MG Marg. With it’s quiet surroundings and warm hospitality made it a great choice. The food was excellent, and the staff was incredibly helpful, ensuring we had a comfortable stay.
